For nearly my entire adult life, I have kept my illness hidden, burdened by the fear that it would alter how others perceive me. I have been afraid that my illness would be seen as a sign of weakness, a flaw in my character—as if somehow, I was defective, or worse, that I had brought this upon myself, and that I deserved it.
