Ukraine war fuels rise of totally resistent bacteria

War-torn Ukraine is not just suffering from hostile attacks from a foreign aggressor, but also from the threat of a totally resistant and contagious bacteria.

In a 2023 study examining bacteria from war-injured patients in Ukrainian hospitals, researchers at Lund University discovered that about a quarter of the bacteria were pan-resistant, meaning resistant to all currently available antimicrobial drugs.

In November, a follow-up study revealed that the Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria in question also carry genes that make them both resistant and contagious.
