Sionna is one of several companies attempting to develop new effective therapies for cystic fibrosis, hoping eventually to challenge Vertex’s dominant position in the field.
Expectations had been high for the company’s drug candidate SION‑719, which was hoped to normalize the function of the CFTR protein in ways that Vertex’s medicines do not. In patients with cystic fibrosis, CFTR function is impaired, causing mucus in the airways to become thick and difficult to clear, leading to chronic lung infections, inflammation, and reduced lung function.
