Roche bets on muscle‑preserving obesity drug in $2.3 billion deal

Roche's subsidiary Genentech is investing in a new type of medicine designed to reduce fat mass while preserving or increasing muscle mass.

A licensing agreement with South Korea’s Hanmi Pharma gives the U.S. company the rights to further develop, manufacture and commercialize the drug candidate HM17321 for obesity and related diseases.

The agreement covers all markets except South Korea and has a potential value of up to 2.3 billion dollars, including an upfront payment of 190 million dollars as well as milestone payments and future royalty revenues.
