The European Commission has no plans to phase out PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, in pharmaceutical packaging. In a written response to the European Parliament, the Commission notes that pharmaceutical packaging is exempt from requirements on recyclability and recycled content under the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. The exemptions are due to be reviewed by 2035.

Three MEPs are calling for a shift from PVC to more recyclable materials in pharmaceutical packaging. The European Commission says there are no plans for a phase-out, pointing instead to existing regulations, a forthcoming review and continued research.
