The newborn injection more parents are choosing to decline

A vitamin K injection has long been routine for newborn babies, protecting them against rare but potentially serious bleeding. But in the US, a growing number of parents are choosing to decline the injection – a trend also seen in Sweden.

In just six months, the proportion of newborns who did not receive vitamin K in the US rose from 5.2 to 8.1 per cent – an increase of 57 per cent. The figures come from an analysis of medical records conducted for Reuters by healthcare analytics company Truveta.
